Traditionally, the Buddy Walk was established by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) in 1995 to honor October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. It serves as an annual public advocacy event. The walk spans one mile and welcomes participants of all abilities without requiring special preparation. Each year, hundreds of thousands join the walk across the United States and around the globe. The Buddy Walk aims to achieve three main objectives: fostering acceptance and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome, raising funds for the creation of innovative and effective programs, and strengthening the Down syndrome community’s influence on local and national policy and practices.
